For thousands of years, Ayurveda doctors have used herbal and spiced-infused wine, called Drakshasavas, as medicine. The Greek physician and father of modern medicine, Hippocrates (300 BC), was also known to have mixed honey and cinnamon into wine as a medicine. In the Harvest 2020 issue of The Meal, I shared Lithuanian Krupnikas, a spiced honey liqueur, and a traditional Eastern European cold remedy.
It's common to find herbal-infused alcohol and wines throughout ancestral dietary rituals of many cultures.
Alcohol is a carrier that dilates the blood vessels and spreads medicinal plant properties throughout the body quickly and efficiently. The combination of spices and alcohol, particularly ginger and cardamom, elicits the relaxation of sore, tight muscles. In addition, cinnamon, clove, and resveratrol from the skins of grapes in the wine are circulatory stimulants, excellent for aiding the cardiovascular system in the movement of stagnant blood.
